ABOUT ME: I started playing the piano at age 6 in 1963, and I started writing songs in the late 1970's. At
age 15, I was a troubled teen, and a minister from my church asked me
to audition as pianist for my church's district teen singing group; but a young lady I competed against
every year in talent competitions had auditioned, and I had no reason
to doubt that she would be selected because she was so talented and
well-respected by the church. Nonetheless, the minister insisted, so I
auditioned, and to my surprise I was selected! I traveled across North Arkansas with this group for just over 3 years until I graduated from high school. When I arrived at college, I told my counselor that I "only know how to play the piano." The next thing I knew I was on stage every month playing a huge grand piano with the staff of music professors in the audience grading every stroke of the keys - classical music, of
course. Looking
back, I can't believe I played the Hungarian Dance in such an
accomplished manner for a High School recital. I tried to play it
recently, and I was thoroughly impressed with my younger abilities at
that moment.
The reason I am telling you this is so that you understand just how pivotal music was for me (as I believe it can be for many young people) at an early age--it literally changed my life, pointing me in a good and wholesome direction. Had I not traveled twice a month for just over 3 years with that group, I'm sure I wouldn't have been as level-headed and grounded as I became.
For this reason, I am extremely passionate about encouraging others to learn to play a musical instrument because these days, learning MIDI music technology and how to play an instrument requires a lot of time and provides more enjoyment than my generation could have ever hoped to experience in the formative stages. I truly believe that anyone who decides to learn is delving into a good and wholesome activity, and for our youth, it can foster confidence, independence, enjoyment, (pianists and guitarists are typically regarded as "leaders") and the amount of time required may keep your child away from others who may be bad influences!
